The Records of Stirling Rowing Club 1928 - 2006
For our Document of the Month this month we are focussing on the wonderful collection of records deposited recently with the Archives by Stirling Rowing Club.
Founded in 1893, although there had been organised regattas and swimming galas on the Forth since the 1850s, the Club was based at Dean Terrace by the River Forth, building their first Club Boathouse there in the same year. The Club was originally known as the Stirling Amateur Boating and Swimming Club, and it is the initials of this title that are given on the crest over the main door of the Boathouse. The Club became affiliated to the Scottish Amateur Rowing Association in 1896, and went on to establish itself as one of the best regarded clubs in Scotland, holding regattas and swimming galas and with club teams and members competing across the country
The present Club Headquarters and Boathouse was built in 1906. The plans, submitted to the Stirling Burgh Dean of Guild Court for building consent, are held at the Archives. The Boathouse facility is also used by rowers from Stirling University and personnel of the armed forces for practice. The Club, now known as Stirling Rowing Club, continues to be very active, rowing on the river throughout the year.
The records include lists of members, fixture lists, minutes from the 1950s and 1960s and many wonderful photographs. We are very grateful to the Club for depositing these records with us.
