Celebrating Women and Girls in Sport: Stirlingshire

Welcome to a space dedicated to the strength, spirit, and success of women and girls in sport across Stirlingshire.

From grassroots clubs to elite athletes, from community-led initiatives to school-based programmes, women and girls are making their mark in every corner of the sporting world. Whether it is on the football pitch, in the swimming pool, on the bike trails, or in the dojo, their passion and perseverance are shaping a more inclusive and active future for all.

This page shines a spotlight on the clubs, coaches, volunteers, and role models who are empowering females of all ages to get active, stay connected, and thrive through sport. Here, you will find stories of inspiration, links to local opportunities, and ways to get involve, whether you are just starting out or looking to take your next step.

Together, we are building a stronger, more confident, and more connected Stirlingshire; one game, one goal, one girl at a time.

Training Sessions

We train every Wednesday from 8pm to 9pm at the Raploch astroturf. Feel free to drop by anytime, and don’t forget your boots!

About Us

Braehead Women’s Walking Football was established in 2021, growing out of a popular mixed session where we noticed a strong turnout of women. Our very first women only session saw 14 players braving a muddy grass pitch with pop-up goals; a humble beginning to what has become an incredible journey.

In just four years, we have grown beyond anything we could have imagined. Walking Football Scotland introduced a national league, and our Over 40s team went on to become Scottish League Champions. Since then, our success has only continued, with major honours including:

  • Over 40s Scottish Cup: 3 times
  • Over 40s League Champions : 2 times
  • Over 50s League Champions: 1 time
  • Over 40s Glasgow Trophy: 2 times

We are currently just one league win away from retaining this season’s titles in both the Over 40s and Over 50s categories.

But for us, it is about much more than trophies. At the heart of our team is a commitment to inclusivity, friendship, and social connection.

We now have over 30 active members, ranging from complete beginners to former Scotland internationals and everyone is welcome. The club has grown to include three Over 40s teams and two Over 50s teams, with even more expansion expected next season.

As we approach Women and Girls in Sport Week, we believe these women represent outstanding role models for the next generation.

Volunteering

Our volunteering opportunities are inclusive and open to everyone, but for women and girls in particular, we offer a range of programmes designed to support and inspire their journey in sport and physical activity. Whether through volunteering roles or placement opportunities, there are many ways to get involved, develop skills, and make a positive impact in the community. To find out more, check out our Active Stirling Volunteer page.

Case study: Melissa

Melissa joined us as a volunteer a couple of years ago, supporting a variety of programmes before taking the lead in Janelle’s Junior Basketball sessions for girls. Alongside her studies and paid work with us, she continued to volunteer to gain experience in primary ASN sport. Last year, she delivered a weekly one-hour sport session for four pupils at Raploch Primary and supported their first sports day. Melissa now works with us and has gone on to further employment through our early years programme.

Case study: Emily

Emily came to us as a placement volunteer, seeking experience in sports marketing within a leisure facility: an area where volunteer interest has traditionally been low. Thinking creatively, we brought her into our Bikes Without Barriers programme, where she supported the programme’s growth and carried out research. This experience has since influenced her decision to follow a career working with children and individuals with additional learning and physical needs in a sports setting.
