Assessment is an ongoing process for all children and young people which includes gathering a range of information to understand their talents, skills and personality; their circumstances and learning styles.
The purpose of assessment is ensure the right help at the right time is available to help children and young people reach their fullest potential.
The process involves looking at individual work, observing children in a range of learning situations and listening to children in a way that suits the individual child. Participation from parents and carers is critical as their input will support the growing picture of a child’s strengths, talents and needs.
A range of professionals may support the assessment including educational psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists.

Parents/carers, under the 2009 Act, can ask for a specific assessment of their child’s additional support needs.
