Bridge of Allan Garden Diary, 1862 – 1868

The Archives is very lucky to have this planting diary for the gardens of ‘Coneypark’, 121 Henderson Street, Bridge of Allan, that appears to have been kept by a succession of gardeners working at that property. The diary has a front section in which the gardener has carefully drawn plans of the various areas of the garden which were then annotated with details of planting and yields over many years.

This plan shows the walled garden areas with the various fruit trees that were planted with notes on the fruit varieties, flavours and how good the yield from each tree was over a number of years.

Other sections in the diary give drainage plans for different areas of the garden and a day by day account of work undertaken in the garden including planting, bed and fence building and harvests. This is a fascinating record of planting choices and cultivation techniques in a Victorian garden.
