The Stirling school’s under-18s ran out 11-1 winners over Grove Academy from Dundee in the end-of-season showpiece at the Falkirk Stadium to claim the silverware for the second year running.
Leading 7-0 at half-time, the girls added four goals after the break against their spirited opponents, with the final whistle sparking wild celebrations among the triumphant team.
After co-captains Sophie Timlin and Jen Ralston proudly lifted the Scottish Schools’ Football Association Shield alongside their jubilant team-mates, more special memories were made as parents, carers, friends and family joined the players on the pitch to share in success.
Head coach Rachel Whillans is Principal Teacher at Wallace High’s School of Sport, which was launched in November 2012 and now supports its pupils’ potential in football, rugby, swimming, dance and basketball.
Cherish forever
She said: “I didn't think anything could top last year at Hampden Park but Friday night was unbelievable! To retain the Scottish cup and bring it back home to Wallace and in the fashion we did, was truly special and something we will all cherish forever.
“Seventeen girls, 7 games, 34 goals scored; a monumental semi-final comeback and an unrivalled spirit saw my girls lift that trophy once again. To say I am proud would be an understatement!
“I have said this before, but this is a special group of players, each of which brings something unique and together they are unstoppable. They have made Wallace history and have shown passion, commitment and the mental strength to overcome every challenge that has come their way.
“A special thank you to S6 co-captain's Sophie Timlin and Jen Ralston who pulled on the Wallace shirt for the final time on Friday night. I’m delighted for both girls, who both got on the scoresheet and did us all proud – they are two fantastic role models and the girls will be missed by the whole squad. We wish them both good luck in their futures.
“A huge thank you to my coaching team – Colin Burke, Emily Gray and Barry Wick – who have been a huge support and to our Head Teacher Scott Pennock, who has backed us all the way.
“Thanks to our mascots Piper and Marlie, who led the team out and to all the Wallace community, who came out and cheered the girls on, it is truly appreciated and gave the team a wonderful experience. Finally, thank you to the SSFA, organisers and match officials, it was a fantastic night.”
It was a fitting finale for the departing S6 members of the team who have reached three national finals in successive seasons, winning two of them.
For five younger members of the squad, there will be an opportunity to do the cup double in the current campaign as they will be part of the side that take on Braidhurst in the U15 final at the Falkirk Stadium on 13 June (8pm kick-off).
Hard work and dedication
Scott Pennock, Head Teacher at Wallace High said: “It was a pleasure to see the hard work and dedication of our pupils and coaching team come to fruition with a great performance on Friday night under the lights at Falkirk Stadium.
“I know the girls have made memories that will stay with them well beyond their years at school. Special mention to our departing S6 pupils who have served as such role models to the team. Well done also to Grove Academy who played the game with such positive sporting spirit and never gave up. We now look forward to the Junior Final on 13 June.”
