Stirling Council, with the support of FEL Scotland are seeking feedback on the newly-opened Walk, Cycle, Live Stirling project to ensure this transformative active travel infrastructure reflects the needs and priorities of communities and will be a crucial part of Stirling’s future transport network.
The survey is open to all residents, and participation is quick and easy. To take part, visit https://bit.ly/WCLStirling.
The survey will run until the end of August. The first opportunity to fill it out in person is at FEL’s Dr Bike popup at their Hub at Stirling Train Station on Thursday 12 June (9.30am - 3pm). Bring your bike for free repairs and give your thoughts while you wait.
The £11 million scheme is a cornerstone of the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal, a £214 million partnership between both Stirling and Clackmannanshire Councils, the University of Stirling and the UK and Scottish Governments.
Two new walking, wheeling and cycling corridors of more than 6.5 km have been created that connect communities, businesses, schools and higher education institutes across the city.
Route one links Stirling Train Station and the University of Stirling, taking in iconic landmarks like Old Stirling Bridge and the National Wallace Monument along the way.
Route two has bridged the gaps between Forth Valley College and Stirling’s historic city centre under the shadow of Stirling Castle.
It has been funded by the Scottish Government through Sustrans’ Places for Everyone programme (£8.4 million) and via the City Region Deal (£2.5 million), and by Stirling Council from developer contributions (£325,000).
The new infrastructure will also lay the foundations for future connections to Clackmannanshire and the wider Forth Valley region, some of which are currently out for consultation. It will also be a key driver of Stirling transition to net zero by 2045 and other key emissions targets and support key plans for the area’s future, notably the Climate and Nature Emergency Plan, the Sustainable Mobility Strategy and the new Local Development Plan that is currently in progress.
The survey, which went live today (10 June), is an opportunity for people to share their thoughts on the current infrastructure, potential improvements and any barriers they face when choosing to travel actively.
Listening to the people who use them
FEL Executive Director, Clara Walker, said: “We know from our work to increase access to walking, wheeling, and cycling that the design and impact of these routes can only be improved by listening to the people who use them.
“That’s why we’re encouraging communities to take part in the survey—whether online or in person at one of our local events during Bike Week or throughout the summer. Event details will be shared through our website and social media channels.”
More attractive option
Stirling Council Leader, Cllr Gerry McGarvey, said: “We want to hear directly from the people who are using the new routes so we can make them better and a more attractive option for other residents and visitors.
“Walk, Cycle, Live Stirling sets a new standard for active travel infrastructure in a Scottish city, providing seamless routes for cycling and walking that link communities and public transport hubs to businesses, schools, the university and college, as well as the wider region.
“It will be vital for supporting the growing shift to active travel in the region and achieving national net zero targets by 2025, by making it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to get around the city rather than making journeys by car.
“As well as delivering a wide range of environmental, health and social benefits, this landmark project also aims to increase economic activity and footfall among businesses, supporting sustainable economic growth.
“It’s been great to see so many people using the new infrastructure already and the feedback from the survey will be invaluable in shaping a more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable Stirling for everyone – so please take a few minutes and have your say.”
